Starting A New American Legion Riders Group

Be sure to check the "Find Your Local ALR" link on the main page to see if there is an ALR near you. If there is one, the Advisory Committee can provide you with contact information for them.

If there isn't one near you, or you want to start one anyway, use the following outline to start a new chapter:

  1. Get the interest of a few members of your Post. It only takes a few to get the ball rolling.
  2. Obtain approval of your post membership to sponsor your group.
  3. If there is already a Chapter or two in your Department, contact them to let them know you're starting a new Chapter, and to get information on how their Chapter is set up.
  4. Frame your starting by-laws from the template which is available in the Chapter Starter Kit. If there are other Chapters in your Department, contact them to obtain their by-laws to ensure you are aligned with the rest of your Department.
  5. Obtain a convenient evening meeting date and time from your sponsoring Post. Best to allow a few weeks to help stir interest in joining your group.
  6. Advertise your intention to start start a new ALR within your Post and any neighboring Posts. A brochure is available in the Chapter Starter Kit.
  7. Hold your first meeting. Vote on officers, your by-laws, and your dues structure (typically, $1 per month). A meeting agenda is available in the Chapter Starter Kit.
  8. Return to this site and complete a Chapter Data Form to announce the formation of your new ALR! Congratulations!
  9. Although this program is run from the Post level, it is still a good idea to send "Courtesy Letters" to your District and Department officers to keep them aware of your progress.
  10. Review the "Frequently Asked Questions" in the Chapter Starter Kit for information regarding purchasing patches, rockers, etc. or any other questions you may have about the ALR.
We've made a "strater kit" of sorts available for forming new Chapters. It can be accessed by CLICKING HERE.
